Euro 2008 (2008 UEFA European Football Championship) takes
place in Austria and Switzerland from 7 June to 29 June 2008. Some
matches (including final) will be played in Vienna.
If you plan to be
around, do not miss the opportunity to visit also Bratislava which
is only 50 kilometers from Vienna with the frequent bus and train
connection. You may also consider to make your base camp from Bratislava
as its restaurants and pubs are excellent (and cheaper) alternative for
the winning match celebration. Rooms in the most hostels and hotels are
also still available for booking.
And while you are in Bratislava, you
can try to visit also some venues important for the history of sport.
Most of Bratislava venues are concentrated in the part of the city called Nove Mesto:
The Football (Soccer) stadium "Tehelne pole" (Brick-field- traditional name
referring to the original purpose of that area)
is the home field of SK
Slovan Bratislava (Cup Winner's Cup winner from 1969 defeating FC
Barcelona) and also Slovak national team. The old stadium is now awaiting the
reconstruction and is open for public only during the matches and
trainings.
Other sport venues nearby include ice hockey Ondrej Nepela stadium (aka Samsung Arena), yellow-black Pasienky Stadium, home ground for football club Inter Bratislava and also athletics (Sergey Bubka scored some of his world records here), and the National Tennis Centre, which is used for Fed Cup as well as Davis Cup matches.
Other not sport-related curiosities are discussed also in our self-guided MP3 tour available for download here .
