Golden Crown from St Martin goes on show

Just-refurbished Golden Crown usually sitting on top of the Saint Martin Cathedral is now on show inside the cathedral. It is a unique opportunity to see this bigger replica of Hungarian Crown as it happens only once a hundred years during the regular renovation. The Crown weights about 150 kg and its height is 165cm. Reported cost of its renovation was about 600.000 EUR.

After the completion of the tower refurbishment, it will be placed again on the top of the cathedral tower for the next hundred years.

George Clooney and Nicole Kidman in Bratislava

In the blogpost about the movie Hostel, we discussed the piece supposedly located in Bratislava but shot in completely different location. Now we will reverse it.

Vienna, war-time Sarajevo and Manhattan (New York City) were the locations of Holywood blockbuster The Peacemaker from 1997 starring Nicole Kidman and Geroge Cloney. Interestingly enough, all were actually shot in Bratislava : Continue reading George Clooney and Nicole Kidman in Bratislava

04. Good Shepherd

ShephardHouseGetting there:

From the castle, you will probably use the stairs towards to city center and pass the oldest castle gate- Sigismond Gate in the Gothic style to get to this audio point. It is on the way down next to the nice narrow building currently housing the Museum of Clocks- House at the Good Shepherd.

In this audio track you will learn:

  • where you can find the Good Shepherd on the house,
  • why is Jewish Street without Jews,
  • who was coronated in St. Martin’s Cathedral,
  • why you cannot compare it with Notre Dame in Paris
  • how much gold was used for the crown on tower top
  • and more…

Castle Hill

Since June 2010, a new and controversial bronze statue is placed at the outer courtyard of Bratislava Castle. It depicts Svatopluk, ruler of Great Moravian Empire, history of which we discuss also in the Castle Hill audio point.

Inside the Saint Martin’s Cathedral
Entrance fee is now required for going inside the cathedral for all days excluding Sundays. The cathedral is under reconstruction.

Bird Fountain
The bird fountain is a fountain only partially. Water sprinkles only from the bottom reservoir this summer season (or never). An upper “bird” reservoir is dry.

Main Square
Set-up of the Main Square is changing quite frequently in order to accommodate various events over the year (concerts, feasts, Christmas markets).
It may happen that the Donor benches are temporarily replaced with the souvenir stands during summer.
